Expect the Best from Your Child … and Get It!

It’s the beginning of a new school year and most students look forward to joining their new class. A new school year means a new start with a new teacher, new classmates, and new opportunities. Here are some things to consider as you plan for the upcoming school year.

Emphasize these 3 A’s:

Attendance—Good school attendance increases student’s self-confidence through participation in academic and social activities necessary for
lifelong learning. Show your child how much you value school and learning by making attendance a priority.

Achievement—Help your child learn to set goals and achieve them. Once goals are met, praise them and allow some time for reflection. Ask, “How difficult was it to meet your goal?” “What strategies helped you achieve your goal?” Reflecting on the process will help develop critical thinking skills needed for success.

Attitude—Being a successful learner starts with having a positive attitude towards learning. A positive attitude lets you relax, remember, focus and absorb information as you learn. Let your child know you want them to always try their best, take risks, make mistakes and be open to new experiences.

Add these 3 B’s:

Be Positive—Promoting kindness and respect can lead to better school performance. Talk to your child about the things that they are working on. When you notice your child doing something nice or well, let them know! Turn their “challenges” into a positive learning experience.

Be Consistent—A predictable routine allows children to feel safe, and to develop a sense of mastery in handling their lives. Establish an effective daily routine of homework/ studying so your child can gain mastery over their life and learning.

Be There for Your Child—Talking and listening play major roles in children’s school success. Take time to talk and listen to your child. Plan some special time alone with them and share your hopes and dreams for them. Encourage them to find their passion and follow it no matter where it goes.
