Encouraging your kids to adapt good tooth-brushing habits at a young age can help them keep their teeth healthy for life.

Parents may not know where to start with dental hygiene for young children, so we’ve compiled this handy guide from several local dental sources, including the Maryland Department of Health.

0 Months to 1 Year

Wipe down your baby’s gums twice a day.

When the first tooth forms, brush it twice a day.

Use a very small amount of toothpaste.

Lift baby’s lip once a month to check for cavities.

1-3 years

Schedule a dental visit before your child’s first birthday.

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Let your child choose a toothbrush and toothpaste.

A story, song or games can make brushing go by faster.

3-6 years

Parents should supervise brushing until kids are 7-8 years old.

Start brushing before handing off brush to child to finish.

Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Can start using an electric toothbrush

6+

Should be flossing regularly

Can start using an adult toothbrush

Follow the 2-2-2 rule: brush teeth twice a day for two minutes and schedule a dentist appointment twice a year.
