Must-Sees: Prince George’s County is close to Washington, D.C., and is the site of the National Harbor. The harbor is a bustling tourism and entertainment site and there’s always something to do there. Conventions are frequently held in the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, and the rest of the harbor has several restaurants, shops, a seasonal farmers’ market and the iconic Capital Wheel ferris wheel.
The University of Maryland, College Park, is also in Prince George’s County and the surrounding town of College Park has many different attractions. The College Park Aviation Museum highlights the science and history behind flight, along with serving as an airport for small planes. Visitors can even see planes take off! The UMD campus itself frequently hosts events and is the site of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, which often holds concerts, plays and other performing arts programs.
Local Nature: Patuxent Wildlife Refuge stretches across 13,000 acres of natural wildlife, with 30 miles of trails across two tracts for walking, hiking, biking, and even horseback riding. The refuge’s visitor center has an art gallery, bookstore and pollinator garden, and often hosts events focused on nature.
Bladensburg Waterfront Park is another notable park in the area, offering boat tours and rentals on the Anacostia River. Visitors often fish, bike and explore some of the on-site attractions, like the “Big Red Caboose,” a 1926-era B&O railroad caboose.
Biking trails are very common in the area, so it’s easy to find a good place to go for a ride or get from place to place without the use of a car.
