The Frederick Arts Council is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Sky Stage, a public art installation and outdoor amphitheater on Carroll Street, next weekend.

The stage will feature local and regional music beginning at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 and Sept.19.

Sky Stage was created by artist Heather Theresa Clark. By her design, a pre-Revolutionary War building that was damaged by a major fire in 2010 was transformed into an open-air amphitheater that seats 140 people. The seating area is situated beside a two-story sculpture of drought-resistant plants that spiral through the building’s doors and windows.

Over the last decade, Sky Stage has hosted everything from live music and salsa dancing to yoga and children’s programming in downtown Frederick.

“This 10th anniversary celebration will honor the incredible artists and community members who have made Sky Stage what it is today. We’re excited to welcome back some of the artists who have been such a key part of Sky Stage’s history,” says Louise Kennelly, executive director of the Frederick Arts Council, in a news release.

On Friday, Sept. 18, Sky Stage will welcome Frederick band Silent Old Mtns to perform its signature indie rock anthems, followed by local hip-hop artist and rapper Stitch EARLY with his band, The Populatn. The evening will also feature performances by blues, soul and jazz singer and “The Voice” contestant Carly Harvey.

The following Saturday evening is set to feature a Washington, D.C. -based up-and-coming guitarist Paulie Boy Blues, neo-soul artist Nan-Ana and Frederick hip-hop artist Roiyalty.

In addition to the 10th anniversary celebration of Sky Stage, the Frederick Arts Council is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The organization is responsible for projects including Sky Stage, the Frederick Festival of the Arts, Art in the Park, the Public Art Initiative and Frederick County Arts in Education grants.
