Frederick’s Child won a bronze award at the 2025 Parenting Media Association Awards, which honors achievements in parenting journalism across the United States. These awards, judged by the University of Missouri School of Journalism and covering content published between July 2024 and June 2025, were announced at the PMA Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois, Nov. 6 to Nov. 8.
The article, “Yule: A Winter Solstice Celebration,” by freelance writer Heather M. Ross, won in the category “General Feature Writing.” Ross interviewed local families who celebrate the pagan holiday of Yule about their traditions and what this oft-forgotten winter celebration means to them.
The PMA judges describe the article as “A festive, well-structured article that invites families into a lesser-known holiday tradition with joy and clarity.”
“The writer skillfully interweaves history, rituals and modern family practices, with good flow and rich imagery,” the judges continue. “This inclusive piece offers parents alternatives and additions to a traditional holiday celebration.”
Previously, Frederick’s Child won PMA awards for “Briefs/Short Stuff” and “Feature Layout” in 2024, as well as “Single-page Design” in 2022 and several awards including “Profile,” “Non-traditional Story Form,” “General Feature Writing” and “Overall Design” in 2021.
