Tucked between the Catoctin Mountains and South Mountain, Middletown was described by a young George Washington as one of most beautiful places he’d ever seen when he first visited the area. Today, the town is home to many historic buildings, as well as farms and breweries that take advantage of Middletown Valley’s lush nature.
Fun on the Farm
Many of Middletown’s most notable attractions are its farms, which host events in the summer, fall and early winter. When it’s hot out, grab a frozen treat at the nearby South Mountain Creamery, which makes ice cream using milk from its dairy cows. Visitors can even feed the calves.
If you’re looking for a perfect place to pick a pumpkin, you have multiple options just outside of town, with Summers Farm and Jumbo’s Pumpkin Patch both letting guests pick their own.

Catoctin Creek Park & Nature Center is a popular hiking spot in the area for families, with trails well-suited for casual hikers with easy access to streams and ponds. It’s a great opportunity for kids to see frogs, salamanders and other critters in their natural habitat. The nature center also features an indoor turtle pond exhibit and an outdoor sensory trail.
