Looking for a new place for your family to get active as we head into the summer? Look no farther than Urbana. Frederick County’s newest YMCA will open its doors on Monday, April 5.

The facility, which broke ground in late 2019, is located between Urbana Middle School and High School—a convenient location for people living in southern Frederick County.

The South County Y will host an open house April 10 and 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for members of the community to explore the brand-new, 62,000-square-foot facility. You can join a cooking class demonstration, try out a group fitness class and more.

The building’s health and wellness center features dozens of cardio and strength machines, as well as a spin room. Staff also host a Child Watch program, which gives adults the opportunity to work out while the kids play.

Kids will find plenty of ways to stay fit, too. They can shoot hoops in the new gymnasium or play around in the aquatics center. The Y will have two pools—one with eight lanes, for serious swimmers, and another pool for kids and families that comes complete with a slide.

The workout facilities are only a few of the many new features the Y offers. Members can also run on the indoor track, hang out in the kids’ zone or spend time in the intergenerational space that’s built for seniors and teens to connect.

If you’re still scouting for summer camps, the Y has plenty of opportunities for your kids when school is out. Explore nine different summer camps, ranging from “Sports Unlimited” to “Cooking Camp.” Camps begin during the week of June 21, and registration is available online.

“The Y will provide positive activities from an early age to help young people reach their full potential so they can grow into thriving adults,” says Chris Colville, president, and CEO at the YMCA of Frederick County, in a news release.

If you’re already a Frederick County YMCA member, you’ll have full access to both the new South County facility and the Downtown Y. Registration for activities begins April 5 for members.

Swimming, sports and more will officially kick off on April 25. For details on open houses, activities and more, visit frederickymca.org.
