With Independence Day almost here, what could be a better way to usher in red-white-and-blue cheer than watching a movie together? In addition to providing families time to spend together, movies shape pivotal events in American History into the form of an easy-to-understand story—making the spirit of Independence Day accessible and enjoyable.

Here are five family-friendly movies to watch this July 4:

“Independence Day”(1996) – PG13 | Directed by Roland Emmerich

A science fiction/action film at the intersection of the extraterrestrial and human world, Independence Day, also known as ID4, takes its viewers from the Nevada Desert to the land above the clouds. Describing a war between humankind and the alien world that occurs on July 4—America’s Independence Day—this film is for families and teens who enjoy suspense and dramatic, nail-biting climaxes that put them on the edge of their seat.

“An American Tail” (1986) – G | Directed by Don Bluth

Describing the journey of a young mouse, Fievel Mousekewitz, and his family as they emigrate from Russia to the United States in search of freedom, An American Tail encompasses themes of familial longing, the encountering of obstacles and long-desired reunion. As they embark on a journey that is challenging yet meaningful, watch this tale to observe how, like human beings, Americans with tails can also be there for each other.

Forrest Gump (1994) – PG-13| Directed by Robert Zemeckis

A love story that emerges where history and memories intersect, Forrest Gump follows the story of a man who, despite being slow-witted, has never led a disadvantaged or restricted life. A beacon of golden sunlight that glows with childlike optimism, Forrest Gump has lived the formative years of his youth at the heart of groundbreaking historical events and now wishes to reunite with his childhood sweetheart, Jenny. As it weaves through American history, Forrest Grump puts a humane lens on Independence Day, allowing us to reflect on the individuals who thrived within those circumstances.

“A League of Their Own” (1992) – PG | Directed by Penny Marshall

When we talk about the impact of war, our thoughts instantly go to food, agriculture and survival. “A League of Their Own” is a movie that captures the influence of the war on sports. When all of America’s athletic young men are sent off to fight in World War II, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was formed. Reflecting the plight of ambitious women who wanted to do more than just wait for their men to come home from the war, this movie portrays strong, self-constructed sportswomen who are out to make an indelible impact and are truly in a league of their own.

Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) – G | Directed by Michael Curtiz

Besides offering moments of joy to recall, memories and also carry stories of their own. Built within the framework of a flashback, Yankee Doodle Dandy is a biopic based on the life of George M. Cohan. Painting an accurate picture of the entertainment industry back in the era of American Independence, Yankee Doodle Dandy is an entertaining, inspiring and, most importantly, informative watch.
