After spending most of the past year inside your home, you may be ready to do some much-needed spring cleaning. Rather than tossing your gently used items, you can donate them to support good causes in Frederick County.
Here are four local organizations that accept children’s clothing and books, among other items, and use your donations to assist community members in need.
Frederick Rescue Mission
The Frederick Rescue Mission provides residential programs and essential items to men, women and children experiencing homelessness in the city. Their Rescued Treasures Clothing Program collects gently-used clothing, including shirts, pants, undergarments and winter gear, plus towels and blankets. Items can be dropped off at their main office or their various drop box locations in the area.
Wonder Book’s #BookRescue mission aims to find a home for every book through repurposing and upcycling. Every second-hand book they receive is either sold at one of their three stores, donated to a charity or school, or recycled. You can take your books to their Frederick, Hagerstown or Gaithersburg locations.
Select Seconds Hospital Thrift Shop
This second-hand clothing store is part of Frederick Health, a local healthcare provider, and run by volunteers of the Frederick Memorial Auxiliary Hospital. Select Seconds accepts items for children and infants, including clean clothing, shoes and toys. Drop off your donation any day except Monday.
GreenDrop offers drop off and pick up services for used items on behalf of four charities, including the American Red Cross and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Donations are then sold by the charities to thrift stores, with proceeds going to support their services. GreenDrop accepts children and infant clothing and footwear as well as toys and books for any age. Visit their website to schedule a pick-up appointment.
