As parents prepare for back-to-school season and kids enjoy the last days of summer break, here are some things for families to keep in mind this August and September.
Bao Wow
Ekiben, a popular Asian fusion eatery known for its bao bun sandwiches, recently opened its first location outside of Baltimore in Frederick — a decision in part thanks to Frederick’s reputation for genuine community. Opening day saw locals lining up around the block.
Frederick on the Rise
It’s almost time for school! Frederick County Public Schools were recognized as a “District on the Rise” by a national Education Scorecard study assessing post-pandemic recovery in schools. FCPS also maintains one of Maryland’s lowest dropout rates.
Relief for Parents
The Division of Family Services is revising guidelines to make it easier for 4-year-olds to enroll in their last year of preschool following the results of the Frederick County Child Care Feasibility Study announced in June.
The Bee’s Knees
Both Frederick County and the City of Frederick have been recognized as “Bee City USA” communities, which will result in formal commitments to protect the area’s native pollinator population, such as planting pollinator gardens and reducing pesticide use.
Honoring History
A historical marker on South Market Street now honors lynching victims James Carroll, John Biggus and James Bowens after a dedication from The Frederick Remembrance Memorial Coalition and Equal Justice Initiative.
Maryland Fair Season
The Maryland State Fair returns for three long weekends between Aug. 27 and Sept. 13 in Timonium, with patriotic themes throughout to celebrate America250, followed by local favorite The Great Frederick Fair (Sept. 18-26).
