Summer is just around the corner, which means warmer weather, late nights and tasty treats. If you’re searching for a refreshing dessert to beat the heat, try these Frederick County ice cream shops — sure to have something the whole family can enjoy!

Rocky Point Creamery | Tuscarora

With 80+ handmade ice cream flavors throughout the year, Rocky Point Creamery is a go-to destination for variety! These fourth generation farmers use only local ingredients, including their own Holstein cows and 700 acres of land. In addition to ice cream, Rocky Point also sells floats, shakes, pints and quarts to go, as well as beef, cheeses and milk. The icing on the cake? Each year, the creamery plants two acres of sunflowers — and all  proceeds from flower sales and photos go to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. rockypointcreamery.com

Swirls of Frederick | Frederick

Located near downtown, Swirls of Frederick offers soft serve and hand-dipped ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes and crepes — all with ice cream, honey and coffee locally sourced in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The shop has indoor seating and free parking. Swirls also sell pre-made and custom-created ice cream cakes, bubble teas and açaí bowls. For dairy-free treats, Swirls makes delicious vegan ice cream and toppings. swirlsfrederick.com

The Little Red Barn Ice Cream Café | Jefferson

Located just 15 minutes from Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, The Little Red Barn offers ice cream, shakes, sundaes and snow cones. Many features are local to the region, like its ice cream from Hershey, Pennsylvania, and Catoctin Coffees, which are roasted in Lovettsville, Virginia. South Mountain Creamery treats come from the creamery’s farm just 5 miles away. The shop — located in a restored 100-year-old barn — is open year-round and makes sandwiches, salads, chili and soups (for those not-so-warm evenings). littleredbarnicecream.com

Sweet Babe’s Creamery | Urbana and Walkersville

Sweet Babe’s first opened in 2018 and now has two locations in Frederick County. At the Urbana shop, families can relax on the outdoor patio while enjoying a sundae, float, ice cream cookie or “taco.” Check out the creamery’s website for exciting outdoor events like story time, bingo and open mic nights. Sweet Babe’s in Walkersville sells to-go frozen treats year-round.
