Named for property owner and farmer John Walker, Walkersville’s history dates back to the early 19th century, but it was first incorporated as a town in 1892. Today, it’s known as a small town with a rich history.
Explore the Great Outdoors
One of Walkersville’s most notable attractions is Fountain Rock Park & Nature Center, which was designated as Frederick County’s first environmental park. In addition to the park’s hiking trails, visitors can explore the former quarry that once stood upon the property. The park has a large population of turtles, and park guests can even buy turtle food with their spare quarters.
All Aboard!
Walkersville honors its railroad history at the Walkersville Southern Railroad & Museum, preserving part of the original Pennsylvania Railroad and housing many railroad artifacts and historic trains. Visitors can take a train ride through the Maryland countryside and charter their own train car for a birthday party or other events. Santa Claus even stops by during the winter months.
